I'm currently in Australia. the city of Brisbane to be precise. My experience here has encouraged me to type a short article on training whilst traveling/in a new place. Lets go for the itemized list as usual.
- it is very easy to be discouraged by not knowing where you are and not being used to training in a strange place. The first few days will undoubtedly suck. Perserverence is the key.
- after a number of days getting your bearings, you should be able to plan routes in your head, definitely plan to run for time, not miles, trying to figure that out will be too much of a pain.
- workouts are exceptionally hard to do. I'm talking about marathon pace, tempo, fartlek, repeat, speed, all that stuff. I've found doing the original swedish-style fartlek (as I understand it) works best. speed up in bursts for random amounts of time, pushing hard for long bouts or very hard for short ones.
- The name of the game is flexibility. This is not something I pride myself on. If you are unable to continue the training you were previously accustomed to, pull the trigger and do what you can to maintain fitness until you return to your previous training situation. I leave you with this:
“I just had a great time out there. When you get chances, you've got to bury them, and I did.” - Patrick White (I have no idea what he is talking about, I just pulled a random quote from the most famous Australian author I'd heard of)
