Fear and Loathing in Minnesota

I posted about this last week, so instead of repeating my whining about what overdoing mileage
did to me, I'll post a link to short article that I should have read a couple weeks ago.

Everything right now is sort-of-fine

I had ok workouts this week while shortening my mileage quite a bit and trying to keep things in
general a little more structured and intelligent.

Workouts:

3/2/1/2/3/2/1/2/3/2/1 fartlek with equal rest intervals.  I was between 4:30 and 4:50 mile pace on
the surges.  My legs didn't feel like lead, which was nice for once.

10x800m in 2:15/2:18/2:15/2:18/2:17/2:17/2:18/2:19/2:20/2:20.  I was feeling pretty rough after #6
I decided to tough it out as long as I didn't go over 2:20.  My legs still felt funny running at
a fast pace, but it was much better than the last time I tried to do this type of workout last week.  Unfortunately I still can't get access to a track.  I have to have a permit two weeks in advance for a crappy dirt track in St. Paul. I did the 800s off GPS measurement on a section of the lake trail by Lake Calhoun.

I have determined that I am an idiot and need a coach.  I finally sacked up and asked my college coach, Mike Smith to help me out.  I should have done this a long time ago, but I was hesitant not because of my own ego (this time) but because I was embarrassed at how mediocre my college running career was, only because of my own laziness and poor decision making. I felt that I had let Coach down by not reaching my potential. I knew this was an unreasonable experience, but I'm the same irrational guy I was back then. Coach Smith is a great guy and a solid coach.  He is not going to show up at my door yelling at me about getting workouts in or things like that.  I appreciated in college that he was very practical and reasonable in the coach-athlete relationship.  I have really struggled to figure out how to organize training blocks and periodization and all of that stuff, so I expect this to help a lot.

I'm heading to Charleston, SC for the Cooper River Bridge Run next Saturday.  I'm a little on edge because I'm not super confident in my fitness right now, but sometimes you just need to amp things up a little and race.  I'm going to Raleigh, and then down to Chawlston with Bobby.  I think it'll be a fun time, there's some money available, and it'll be nice to get out of the Cities for a little bit.

My big goal now is the Mt. Sac Relays on April 19.  This is my only real shot to get a fast 10k.  I really want to get in the trials this summer, but I at least need to get a better 10k PR, which is more likely.  I've never run a fast track 10k, so putting down a respectable time will make my resume look a lot better.
